Chronic stress is like pushing against a gorilla all day in an effort to control it. This habit of resistance turns life into a struggle. You can let go of stress by either accepting, changing or leaving a stressful situation.

“The truth is that there is no actual stress or anxiety in the world; it's your thoughts that create these false beliefs. You can't package stress, touch it, or see it. There are only people engaged in stressful thinking.”  ~ Wayne Dyer

ACTION STEPS

Stress is like a thief that sneaks up on you, and robs you of your health, happiness and peace of mind. The good news is, you can stop this thief in its tracks by changing your response to it. Look for the lesson in every challenge and grow from the experience rather than suffer through it.

Stress is useful when it triggers the fight-or-flight response to deal with real danger. The release of cortisol helps your body deal with a life-threatening situation; however, if the stress is chronic, cortisol is no longer beneficial and becomes stored in the body rather than used for survival. Too much cortisol will harm you rather than help you.

Here are some symptoms of high cortisol levels: weight gain, anxiety, insomnia, high blood pressure, fatigue, mood swings, acne, aches and pains, hormonal imbalances, infertility and depression. To lower cortisol levels, eat organic whole foods, exercise daily, lower stress, reduce caffeine, sugar and alcohol, and get enough sleep.

Meditation lowers stress. It’s useful to practice being at ease and in the present moment because that’s where inner peace resides, and stress is nonexistent. Meditation turns off the stress response and turns on the relaxation response. Start with five minutes and work up to twenty minutes, once or twice a day.

Yoga is a practice that trains your mind and body to work together while releasing the tension associated with stress. It incorporates deep breathing, which activates the parasympathetic nervous system and allows you to feel more at ease. Even twenty minutes a day can make a difference in reducing stress.

To help your body cope with stress it’s important to follow an anti-inflammatory diet, combined with adaptogen herbs, antioxidants and phytonutrients. These essential nutrients are available in, Organifi Gold, a “golden tea” you can drink at bedtime to help you relax, rejuvenate, and sleep better. Chronic stress will throw you off balance. Tune into your body throughout the day to be aware of shallow breathing. This is a sign that you’re feeling stressed. Simply take a few deep, relaxing breaths and your body will automatically turn off the stress response.
